Spices not only add flavor but they could be adding powerful health benefits. Here’s a list of some of the best spices to keep you in tip top shape!
This bright yellow spice is most commonly associated with curry but can be used in a wide variety of dishes to add flavor or just color. Turmeric contains the compound curcumin which acts as an antioxidant as well as an anti-inflammatory. These could help slow down aging by reducing the oxidative stress on the body and calm inflammation. Curcumin is more bioactive when combined with black pepper, so add both to your dish for maximal absorption.
Cayenne pepper contains the compound capsaicin which can help reduce appetite and increase the metabolism. If you’re watching your weight, try adding some cayenne to your meals for an added metabolism boost. Watch out, its spicy!
Ginger has been known for centuries to help soothe upset stomachs and is still use today to treat cramps and nausea. Try steeping a small chunk of fresh ginger in boiling water for ten minutes and then sipping it slowly. This should help eliminate any tummy troubles.
Typically paired with desserts, this powerful spice can have strong effects on blood sugar. Studies have shown that even as little as half a teaspoon a day can help your body regulate its blood sugar. Try adding cinnamon to your morning oatmeal for some whole grains and healthy fibers!
