Have you ever wondered what the extra hole in your running shoe really does? Turns out there is a reason why it is there. When you string your lace through it using the right technique, you create what is known as the ‘heel lock’ or ‘lace lock’, which stops your heel from moving around at the back of your shoe.

With your foot firmly in place, you also minimize the possibility of your toes hitting the front of your shoe.

To learn how to properly execute the heel lock, watch the video above.
